HALEAKALA RANCH SHORT HISTORY


Haleakala Ranch has long been established on Maui. Spanning from thick forests and vital watersheds, to rolling pasturelands, to Maui style deserts, Haleakala Ranch has it all. The early stages of the Ranch's history began in the 1870's. Through a series of partnerships, Haleakala Ranch and the smaller Kapalaia Ranch were merged; that was the beginning. Throughout the generations to follow, other mergers were made, forging today's Haleakala Ranch Company.

A majority of Haleakala Ranch's lands are located in "Upcountry" Maui. Upcountry consists of the Northern slopes of Haleakala, Maui's dormant volcano. Fertile soil, plenty of sunlight, and a treasured cloud mist make Upcountry very livable. Plants thrive in comforting Upcountry, as do people.

The Ranch has long been concerned with watershed protection and sustainable land management. The Ranch's influence can be seen throughout Upcountry Maui. Pasturelands provide for spectacular, open views up and down the wide, sweeping slopes of Haleakala. Ranch Polo fields and roping arenas can be found here and there. Historic buildings long to tell the tales of the early Paniolos (the Hawaiian version of Espanol, or Spanish cowboys). KAUPO RANCH SHORT HISTORY


Kaupo Ranch was established in the mid-1930's, when negotiations were made for the purchase of the property from the Marciel and Drummond families. At that time, access was by foot or on horseback through Haleakala Crater, or by boat into Nu'u Bay.

At the time of the purchase, there were only dirt roads around the ranch. The children of the ranch helped their parents grow their own sweet potatoes, squash, beans, and other garden vegetables. They collected wild greens, mango, guava wild plum. Families would spend the weekends at the beach fishing. Clothing was ironed with an old charcoal iron. The floors of the homes were covered with woven lauhala mats, and families cooked on wood stoves. Rainwater was gathered for use, although eventually a pump system was installed in the late 1930's.

Running from Haleakala National Park, at a level of about seven thousand feet, all the way to the sea, this ranch spans rain-forest, mountain terrain, dry lands and lava fields, as well as verdant pasture. Steeped in pre -contact Hawaiian history, Kaupo still is a small, rural community with one General Store. Cowboy paniolos ride their feisty horses as they round up and brand cattle. Kaupo Ranch is in the midst of a vigorous rejuvenation of their 11,300 acre (7500 fee simple, the rest leased) ranching operation.

Kaupo Ranch is also known by sport hunters and local hunters who seek feral deer, goat and wild pig to feed their families.

For many years, when Kaupo Ranch was young, the only school teacher was Mrs. Mahalo ("mahalo" means "thank you" in Hawaiian). She taught 1st through 8th grade in a schoolhouse in Kaupo. Her desk was in the partition between the two rooms of the schoolhouse. Some grades had only one child. Other grades had two or more children in them. Mrs. Mahalo taught them all, and is fondly remembered by those adults lucky enough to have known such a way of life. Kaupo now has a mix of cowboys, artists, retirees, and back-to-the-land organic farmers. It is a place of magic, mystery and memory.
